Cuppa Cansa with friends

October is Breast Cancer Month, and two friends got together to raise funds for Cansa West Rand. This project started when Dorette Els and Johanette Human knitted together hundreds of bandanas to donate but still wanted to do more.

They decided to host a Cuppa-for-friends-around-a-table and the community’s women came out in their numbers to support the cause. They were wearing fancy pink hats to show their solidarity with cancer month, and were serenaded by the smooth vocals of Manie Jackson. The blanket the duo knitted was donated to Joshua Coetzee, an 11-year-old who suffers from Ewing sarcoma, where cancer cells are found in the bone or soft tissue.

“Our target was just over R8 000, but we managed to surpass our initial goal and raised R18 500. This is our way of helping and making a small difference in the lives of many,” said Dorette and Johanette.

Cansa West Rand’s Ashley Olson said the money received will go a long way in helping the organisation assist more cancer patients. The organisation helps patients without medical aid to receive treatment and arranges for those who cannot go to hospital to receive home patient care.

“We also help with counselling support, setting up appointments and helping at the care centres. October is Cancer Month but I want to urge the community to assist us not just in this month but throughout the year. Those who can not assist us financially can always give us their time and volunteer at our centres or support our Shavathons,” said Ashley.
