You don’t appreciate what you have

J Kriel from Roodepoort writes:

Yes I most definitely was affected (Are you affected? Record, 7 October). I am studying towards my second degree in Business Management.

Those hooligans at UJ were so vicious, militant and violent, damaging and destroying property and demanding that all those diligent students who wanted to continue with their studies vacate the classrooms.

Because of this we refused to risk our lives as well as our vehicles, and the UJ lecturers accommodated us.

We were able to liaise with them via emails, and assignments were uploaded electronically. We were even given online and electronic exams.

For this a heartfelt thank you to all the lecturers of the Business Management – Specialising in Business Analysis Faculty.

And to those hooligans who call themselves students, here is a definition of a civilized student : A person who attends a school, college, or university, a person who studies towards an objective and is an attentive and systematic participant, i.e. one who is focused on and dedicated to obtaining the degree/ qualification they are pursuing. They are the students in classrooms studying and preparing for exams, not you thugs and hooligans hell bent on destroying our tertiary institutions, which have been around long before you even gave your first breath.

That is why you don’t appreciate the millions, blood, sweat and toil it took to get them off the ground, albeit in the apartheid era.

The police should use the full force of the law to protect every single one of our tertiary institutions against those thugs and hooligans, and the institutions should ban them for 10 years.

Dr Blade Nzimande needs to take a solid position on all this destruction, and violent attitudes and behaviour.
