Roodies hosts interclub challenge

Second round of the West Rand Interclub Series

It was a lively and exciting atmosphere as the second round of the West Rand Interclub challenge kicked off. Athletes from running clubs such as Florida, Golden Reef and Panorama were raring to go.

This month Roodepoort Athletics Club (Roodies) hosted the challenge in the form of a 5km time trial. Runners collect points and the club with the most points will be declared the overall winners. Almost 200 runners signed up, more than double the number at last month’s event.

This year the event has attracted high-profile sponsors such as MyWay Life, Randburg Runners and PVM Smart Foods. Although the race seemed to be a competition between Roodies members, it was Golden Reef’s Michael Msini who crossed the finish line first. He did so in a time of 17:58:40, almost a minute ahead of Roodies ace Godfrey Mokome who finished in a time of 18:28:41.

Roodies’ chairperson Charlie Herselman was happy with how smooth the event went.

“More and more runners will be signing up to compete in this series because we have fantastic sponsors on board. The issues we had with the electronic tags last month was resolved and we started on time. Seeing our club’s runners competing hard tonight was fantastic,” he said.
