Protest reloaded: Bakkie ‘delivers’ load of rocks for protesters

They managed to prevent some of the substations being set alight.

Although Metro Police withdrew from the scene of the protests on South Road earlier and West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) reopened the road, the protesters have resumed their violent action and the road has been closed again.

Frik van Zyl, spokesperson for WSRNW said they, along with the police and Metro Police re-intervened after the protesters had started burning electrical mini-substations in the close vicinity. They managed to prevent some of the substations being set alight. Van Zyl also said the patrollers informed him that a bakkie came to ‘deliver’ a load of rocks and stones to the protesters.

At about 3pm Greenshank Avenue also had to be closed.

Van Zyl has advised motorists to rather use Ontdekkers Road, Corlett Avenue and Progress Road but that they must also avoid the stretch of Albertina Sisulu Road behind Westgate since the violence might spill over to the side of Princess informal settlement that borders this road.

The residents of the informal settlement are protesting because City Power has removed two mini-substations from which they were stealing electricity.
