Global Hero helps cricket team

Ester is a cancer survivor and a Global Hero of Hope

Laerskool Gustav Preller’s U/9 cricket team touches the hearts of their supporters with each game they play. What had supporters cheering for them at each game was that some of the boys in the team would play in their school clothes, because they could not afford cricket kit. However, one of their biggest supporters, Ester Pretorius, took it upon herself to help. She surprised the team which was due to play Panorama Primary School’s team, by donating 15 sets of boys’ cricket clothing and caps.

Ester is a cancer survivor and a Global Hero of Hope. This global initiative involves the selection of Heroes of Hope from participating countries around the world. Survivors are given the spotlight to show that there is life after diagnosis. These Heroes inspire other community members who have been touched by cancer. They’re a testament to the progress that has been made in the fight against cancer and are changing the face of survivorship worldwide.

“The boys couldn’t wait to put on their new clothes and were so happy. To see the smiles on their beautiful faces is something I will never forget. As a Global Hero of Hope I do a lot of work in the community and assist where it’s needed. It costs nothing to give your time to help another,” she said.

After receiving the clothes and changing as quickly as they could, the players made a declaration to win the match against Panorama, which they did in emphatic style. The team is through to the finals where they will be looking to show their gratitude to Ester by emerging victorious.
