Off to the Games

Gymnasts off to Cape Town

Several gymnasts from the 24 Seven Gymnastics and Trampoline Club are hard at work, training for one of the biggest dates in the South African Gymnasts Federation calendar.

The gymnasts will be participating in the South African Gymnastics Games next month. The competition will be held in Cape Town, at two venues, namely the Western Cape Sports School and the Wynberg Military Base Sports Hall.

The Western Cape Sports School will feature the gymnastics disciplines of Artistic Men, Artistic Women and Rhythmic Gymnastics, while the Wynberg Military Base Sports Hall will host the Acrobatic Gymnastics, Rope Skipping, Trampoline and Tumbling competition.

Four gymnasts from the club will be taking part in the competition and are champing at the bit to show off their talents on such a grand stage.

Liam Blake said he is excited to compete in the Mother City for the first time, make new friends and get to know his current clubmates better. His sentiments were echoed by Joshua Groenewald, who added that his dream is to become a South African champion.

“Trampoline is amazing and when I’m in the air, I have the whole world to myself. That’s why I love the sport,” he said.

Huibrecht Groenewald, who has been involved in gymnastics since she was in Grade 1, has amassed more than 20 medals and is aiming to increase her tally in Cape Town. However, she will have stiff competition from her clubmate Dianè Kriek, who recently took up the sport. She will be trying to reach the same number of medals and sees the Games as a good place to make a start.
