Anton in charge

Anton Coetzer is the new principal of Gustav Preller Primary School

Anton Coetzer has been tasked with taking Laerskool Gustav Preller into a new era. The 52-year-old was announced as the new principal of the school, taking over from Jacques Rentzke.

Anton is no greenhorn when it comes to teaching, having been in the profession for 27 years. He started teaching at schools such as Laerskool Generaal De la Rey before securing a permanent position at Laerskool Culembeeck. He taught at the school for 21 years, becoming Head of Department (HOD) in 1999. He was one of the best Mathematics teachers at the school.

“Teaching runs in the family. Two of my brothers studied teaching. One of them became a principal and the other one eventually turned to architecture. I chose the teaching profession because I wanted to make a difference in the children’s lives. I believe becoming a teacher is a calling and not just a job. We are fulfilling God’s purpose through teaching,” he said.

In 2011 Anton joined Gustav Preller as deputy principal where he shared his passion for Maths with his pupils. Seeing a smile on their faces when they understood and appreciated his subject means a lot to him.

“When pupils get it and have a sparkle in their eyes for Maths, that is when I feel being a teacher is worthwhile. To see the pupils’ smiles is why teaching is rewarding because the impact I make is visible,” said Anton.

Taking over from Jacques, Anton has vowed to continue the good work of his predecessors and improve on the legacy left behind. One way to do so is an open-door policy to his office for pupils and their parents who have issues or concerns.

“The school is one of the top academic schools in the area and we have the best teachers.

We are a multi-cultural school and here, every pupil’s well-being matters and our teachers care. The school has always been this way and I will continue that hard work. I will engage with parents and resolve any problems they might have; they are welcome to meet with me any time,” he said.

One aspect of teaching Anton will miss is being in class with his pupils and being involved in the sports department.

“Although I am still teaching, handing over the reigns has not been easy. It’s a sad yet joyous occasion because I am excited about the new challenge but I will miss teaching pupils and being in class with them. I used to be involved in the Golden Lions development programme and school athletics, now I will be watching from the stands.”

Anton also had some advice to share when it comes teaching, especially Mathematics, which is seen as a difficult subject.

As a teacher you have to be passionate about what you are teaching. When you understand your subject you can explain it better to the pupils. I’ve had pupils who’ve come to me for help in Maths and it’s not because I’m better than other teachers, but pupils feed off my passion and are willing to work harder.”

He added that the school has a bright future and will build on the standards that have made it one of the best in Roodepoort.

“By Grade 7, I want our pupils to have experienced as much as possible to get them ready for high school. We will give them a good and solid foundation.”
