Photos and video: House gutted less than 1km from fire station

Crowd boo as EMS arrives.

A sadly ironic drama played itself out on the corner of Exner and Amelia Streets at about 10am today (30 August) when a former crèche was gutted by a fire.

Although about a kilometre away from a Roodepoort Fire Station, fire trucks only arrived 40 minutes later. The greater Roodepoort area allegedly did not have trucks available and fire trucks had to be dispatched from either Dobsonville or Randburg. A man standing on top of the burning house desperately tried to quench the fire with a garden hose, risking his life in the process.

When the fire trucks finally arrived the crowd both cheered and booed. A minor scuffle broke out between the owner of the house and the Metro Police after they allegedly asked him “to fetch his ID”.

Residents of the home could save only their clothing and a few small items.
