Jo’burg or Tshwane – Who issues the most speeding fines?

More than 800 000 vehicles travel into Johannesburg daily.

Many motorists still do not take the issue of speeding seriously as they often do not realise the dire consequences.

Over and above the fact that speeding can end in death or injury, there are also legal repercussions. If a motorist is caught driving 90km/h over the speed limit in a residential area, or 40km/h over the speed limit in a non-residential area, it is regarded as a criminal offence and he or she will be arrested. The motorist might also have his or her licence suspended.

According to the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA), six million fines were issued in Gauteng, of which 5.1 million were issued in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). Among the fines issued in CoJ, 4,4 million were for speeding. In Tshwane a total of 950 000 fines were issued of which 502 000 were for speeding only.

According to Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the trend indicates that residents of CoJ are still not heeding the call not to speed. He explained that there are 4,8 million vehicles in CoJ, of which more than 800 000 drive into the city daily, which means there are more traffic in CoJ than Tshwane.
