Union sounds strike warning to MTN

MTN 's decision to outsource criticised by Union

“Strike action is imminent and can start any time.”

These words, from Clyde Mervin, president of the Communications Workers Union (CWU), could see MTN subscribers facing difficulties with service delivery by their provider. The CWU called on its members to be ready to initiate strike action against MTN at a moment’s notice.

The decision whether to strike will be made after a meeting between the union and MTN on 16 August.

MTN’s decision to outsource a portion of its call centre facility to a third party is being criticised by the union and its members.

The new call centre facility is set to be finalised by September.

According to Mervin, this action could lead to the loss of the jobs of at least 400 casual workers. “This is unfair treatment and we will show them they cannot play with people’s lives.

The last strike lasted two months and we will do it again if we must,” he said.

Nhlanhla Qwabe, the Chief Human Resources Officer at MTN, said that management believes in constructive engagement with all its stakeholders and further discussions and consultations with the unions are welcomed.

“MTN is implementing its strategy of transforming customer experience,” she said.

Strike action has not yet started; however, the Record will keep its readers updated on further developments.
