Relief on the cards for motorists in September?

Petrol price likely to decrease substantially

August saw the petrol price decrease by 99 cents per litre, but that happy event was somewhat marred by the fuel strike that started at the end of July.

Although this strike is now entering its second week, with negotiations between members affiliated to the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied workers union (Ceppwawu) and the National Petroleum Employer’s Association deadlocked, there is some good news for motorists.

The Automobile Association’s (AA) mid-month petrol price analysis indicates that motorists could experience another substantial petrol price decrease in September.

The AA, having looked at the Central Energy fund’s latest data, said, “Ongoing rand strength out-muscled a climbing oil price, raising the possibility of substantial fuel price cuts this month end.”

Although the September fuel price decrease will depend on the continuing upward trend of the rand, international petroleum prices are expected to decrease by up to 69 cents per litre for petrol. Diesel prices could come down by as much as 94 cents per litre and illuminating paraffin shows a potential decrease of 92 cents per litre.

The total amount by which fuel prices may decrease could be affected if the rand should stop strengthening. “But”, said the AA, “there would have to be a substantial reversal for the current picture to be spoiled before the end of August.”
