Firearm renewal process explained

Renew your firearm licence in time

Do you know if your firearm licence is still valid? When was the last time you checked?

Do you know what to do when your licence expires?

The South African Police Service (SAPS) advises all licence holders to apply for renewal of their firearms at least 90 days before the expiry date. If an application to renew a licence or permit has been lodged within the prescribed period, the licence or permit will remain valid until the status of the application has been decided. No application for the renewal of a licence or permit may be granted unless the applicant shows that he/ she has continued to comply with the requirements for the licence in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. You do not need to attend firearms training before applying for renewal.

“You need to visit the designated firearms officer (DFO) at the police station nearest to where you reside, with the required documents.

You will be assisted with the application for renewal,” said Warrant Officer Mike Mashele, DFO at Roodepoort Police Station.

You need the following to apply for a firearm licence renewal:

– Completed application form (available at the police station)

– R70 for the competency renewal and R70 for each firearm renewal applied for

– Identity document

– Four colour passport photos (good quality)

– All firearm licence cards

– Proof of residence

– Two testimonials from your spouse/ friend and/ or a work colleague

The DFO will make sure the application forms are completed, documents are in order, photos are correct and issue you with a remittance advice to take to the finance office at the station. Payment can only be done in cash or by bank guaranteed cheque.

After you have paid the application fees, you will receive a receipt as proof of payment, which you need to take back to the DFO’s office.

The DFO will give you a signed acknowledgement of receipt (which you need to keep in a safe place as proof of submission). The DFO will capture all necessary data and submit your application to the SAPS Firearms Office in Pretoria.

If you have forgotten to renew your firearm licence the DFO at the police station will not be able to capture your application as your licence will have been blocked on the system. You are however advised to visit your nearest DFO as soon as possible.

Your application will be done in the same way as with a normal renewal, but you will have to provide a reason and proof of why you did not do your renewal in time.

Your application will then be recorded in the DFO’s firearms register and sent to the Central Firearms Registry in Pretoria. Your application and reasons for submitting it late will be considered and a decision to accept or refuse the application will be made.

The Firearms Office at the Roodepoort Police Station is on the ground floor. They are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, but the public is advised to do their applications before 3:30pm to be able to make their payments at the finance office.

For any queries regarding your application you can also contact the Central Firearms Registry (CFR) in Pretoria on 012 421 8009 or 012 353 6581.
