Nightmare experience at clinic

Patient 'hurt and humiliated' at Weltevreden Park Clinic

“I am so hurt and humiliated.” These are the words of Sibongile Mosoang after she visited the Weltevreden Park Clinic recently.

Sibongile went to the clinic on 28 July with her son and helper. They arrived at the clinic at 3:20pm, when she told the receptionist they were there for a blood pressure check for the helper and immunisation for her son.

According to Sibongile, the receptionist told her they could not help them, as they were too late – the clinic was closing at 4pm.

When Sibongile insisted on being helped because she had arrived at the clinic on time, the receptionist told her, with an attitude, to sit down and wait to be helped.

“Everybody was doing their own thing,” She said. “The sisters were walking up and down chatting to each other, and the cleaner also started to clean the clinic,” says Mosoang.

At 3:45pm, the nursing staff told Sibongile to come back the next day as the clinic was about to close. According to Sibongile, she told them that she would not leave until they had assisted her. “I was at the clinic on time but the staff just did their own thing and did not bother to help us,” she said.

After this statement from Sibongile, the clinic staff and cleaner allegedly became very threatening and aggressive towards her. “They started swearing at me. They even brought my late mother into it. They told me to go to a private clinic and pay, then I would be helped immediately,” she recalled.

According to Sibongile, the nursing staff and cleaner threatened to have them beaten up. At that point, she decided to leave. “My son did not get his immunisation, not did my helper have her blood pressure checked. When I asked the staff for their names, they refused to tell me. So I took photos of them – and the nursing staff even posed for me,” she said.

She went to the police station, planning to open a case against the clinic but was advised to lay a complaint at the Department of Health and take it from there.

The Record has contacted Sister Margaret Mashinini at the Weltevreden Park Clinic for comment, but no feedback has been received yet.
