Fuel strike to leave stations stranded

Fuel strike to hurt

The Total Witpoortjie Service Station has assured customers it will not be running out of fuel any time soon.

Manager Salim Bouskatt’s statement comes after more than 15 000 employees affiliated to the Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) announced that they would be downing tools today.

The strike is not part of forecourt staff negotiations with the Motor Industry Bargaining Council. This means petrol station attendants will still be at work. The strike will initially affect refineries, depots and the transportation of petrol to filling stations, but once petrol stations start to run dry, motorists will be affected.

“For now we are okay, and although there is concern about running dry, we have contingency measures in place to ensure the needs of our customers are met,” said Salim.

The union is reportedly asking for a pay increase of nine per cent; two per cent more than the National Petroleum Association has offered.

Motorists are urged to top up their fuel tanks as regularly as possible, and avoid unnecessary journeys and stop-start driving to conserve fuel.
