Dustbin scourers turn out to be armed robbers

Street is a hotspot for attacks by street robbers.

A man walking along Demper Street in Lindhaven this morning (26 July), fell prey to a gang of armed robbers.

The man was walking in the street just before 9am when four men, all dressed in blue overalls, approached him. One of the men pulled a firearm on him and they took his cellphone and wallet. The men then fled into Princess informal settlement, which borders on Demper Street. The caretaker of a townhouse complex on the street told West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) that he had seen the four suspects earlier when they were sifting through, or pretending to sift through, the wheelie bins in the street.

Frik van Zyl of WSRNW told the Record that residents are robbed regularly in this street due to its easy access to the informal settlement.
