West Rand hosts Welpie wrestling

Fans were treated to more than 200 matches between wrestlers from U/6 to U/16.

More than 100 wrestlers showed off their skills on the mat when the West Rand Wrestling Gymnasium hosted their annual Welpie Amateur Wrestling Tournament at the Witpoortjie Recreation Centre last Saturday (23 July).

Wrestlers from eight clubs around Johannesburg including West Rand clubs such as Die Ruiter, Danie Van Zyl, Akasia, Johan Theron and Eagles Fochville participated in the competition, which is in its 13th year. Initially the idea behind the tournament was to give clubs in the Central Gauteng region the opportunity to face each other in practice matches. However, over the years it has expanded to include various clubs from different backgrounds.

Fans were treated to more than 200 matches between wrestlers from U/6 to U/16. West Rand Gym chairperson Morne Maree said the purpose of the competition is for the young wrestlers to have fun on the mat.

“We also look at the progress of some of our wrestlers in a more competitive setting along with their peers. This motivates them to do well and have as much fun as they can because wrestling is fun,” he said.

The competition also included wrestlers such as Machiel Grobler and Arghale Muller who recently participated in the Cadet and Junior Continental Championships in Algeria.
