Crime prevention during loss of power

Do not let criminals capitalise when the electricity is down.

Unplanned power outages as well as load shedding can create ideal opportunities for criminals to strike.

Here is how you can prevent falling victim to crime during these times:

• At Home during a power outage: In this highly technological age ensure that all your automated gates and doors are secured, and that all other gates and doors are locked.

• Generators: If you are using a generator never operate it anywhere inside your home, including the garage or any confined area, as it produces carbon monoxide gas which can be fatal. A generator should be kept at least 3.5 meter away from the home with its exhaust pointing away from the house. It should always be installed by a qualified electrician.

• Load shedding and unannounced power cuts can dramatically reduce the life span and effectiveness of your alarm battery. Should your battery be older than two years, you should have it checked or replaced, contact APCAN or your regular Security Company so should you be left without power you will not be left without protection.
