National Pet Fire Safety Day

Protect your pets

National Pet Fire Safety Day is observed on 15 July.

Just like humans need fire drills, pets need consideration when preparing for fire emergencies.

In order to educate pet owners to effectively plan for unexpected fire emergencies, The American Kennel Club and ADT Security Services declared National Pet Fire Safety Day in 2009.

By taking preventable measures now, you can save your pets and your home.

Here are some fire safety tips:

· 1. Always extinguish open flames. Curious pets will paw at sizzling grease and wagging tails can knock over candles, quickly sending a room up in flames.

· 2. Remove knobs from the stove, that way it could not be turned on by accident.

· 3. Consider flame less candles in the event of a power outage.

· 4. Replace glass water bowls with metal or plastic. Outside on wooden decks they can heat up and actually start a fire.

· 5. Store collars and leashes near the entrance of your home. Keep your pets in the main living area when away, to ensure easy rescue.

· 6. Secure young pets in a pet kennel or pet proofed room when away from home.

· 7. Have a plan when you are at home. Make sure each family member knows who is responsible for each pet.

To observe National Pet Fire Safety day, put these tips into practice and have a fire drill. Keep your pets and humans safe!
