From politics to gospel music

He has to say goodbye to politics for now.

For some politics and gospel music make for strange bedfellows, but not for 42-year-old local resident Khathu Khedzi.

Khedzi, founder and convener of the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Region B and C branches, has just been nominated in two categories of the Independent National Gospel Music Awards (Ingomas) for his album Imikhulungu Ngawe – best producer and best worship album. The best producer award will be decided by a panel while the best worship album award will be decided by public voting.

Although born in Gauteng, Khedzi grew up in Venda where his dream to be a gospel singer was born, regardless of his family taunting him for being a “bad singer”. While in Venda, Khedzi sang lead vocals in a local band but after matric he moved back to Gauteng where he continued his tertiary studies in information technology. This is also where he became a political activist and eventually joined the EFF.

“Unfortunately I will have to exit politics for now due to the commitments my musical career demands from me,” said a visibly chuffed Khedzi. He will soon be performing in Scotland and Zambia. “I do not want to serve my community half-heartedly and therefore will step aside for another comrade.”

Khedzi released his debut album last December after founder of Kingdom Sounds Records, Pastor Thebogo Phasha, noticed his talent and signed him to his record label.

“I hope that my story will inspire others to never give up on their dream and realise you can always grow, especially if you follow your heart and passion,” concluded Khedzi.

Khedzi, who has exchanged the controversial red overall for a snazzy look befitting a rising star, has asked the community to support him by voting for his album. They can do so by sending an SMS with the words “Ingomas best worship album Khathu Khedzi” to 40439. SMSes cost R2 each and people can vote multiple times.
