Nobody was injured in the storm of bullets in Roodekrans at 6am this morning (5 July) when passers-by had to take evasive action.
DMS Security reaction officer Jacques Spannenberg responded to a house robbery in Babiana Street after five suspects had gained entry into the home. They held the family at gunpoint and took various items such as cellphones, laptops and an undisclosed amount of money.
Spannenberg spotted the suspects’ getaway vehicle, a white Chevrolet Cruz, on Belladonna Road and gave chase, calling for backup. When the suspects turned into CR Swart Road, which was experiencing heavy traffic, three of them opened fire on Spannenberg. One of the bullets went through his windscreen and instantly shattered it. It blinded the reaction officer, forcing him to fall back. The suspects managed to get away. Spannenberg was taken to hospital for further treatment. DMS Security operations manager Ivan Shawe said the family is a bit traumatised but they are coping.
“At that time of the morning traffic is insane. Many people were going to work so CR Swart was busy. Some had to drive through the storm of bullets while others swerved out of the way – it was an intense situation. Luckily no one was hurt in the process,” he said.
