Drunk driver five times over limit

Drunk driver arrested

JMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has praised two staff members from the mayoral office who stopped a drunk driver. The two members were driving on Main Reef Road after 7pm on Sunday when they spotted a truck driving on the wrong side of the road. According to Minnaar, the truck was swerving, barely missing other vehicles. The truck was skipping red traffic lights and this alerted the two staff members. They decided to follow the truck, call for assistance and hatch a plan to stop the driver.

“The staff members flagged down the driver, claiming he had scratched their vehicle. They stopped in Amalgam near a petrol station. Spotting a police vehicle filling up at the petrol station, the two told the truck driver they needed a torch from the police to assess their vehicle’s damage,” he said.

The police officers immediately arrested the drunk driver. When JMPD officers arrived, they conducted a breathalyser test. The driver’s blood-alcohol level was 1,3 grams per 100ml of blood; the legal limit is 0,05 grams per 100ml.

“It was obvious that the driver was very drunk and still had a bottle of liquor between his legs. Those staff members from the mayoral office did a good service. They stopped a big calamity from occurring. They were very brave and creative to get him to stop and get out of the truck. To get the driver who could barely keep his balance to follow them to the filling station was good work from them,” said Minnaar.

The truck driver was arrested for drunken and reckless driving, and will appear in the Brixton Magistrates’ Court this week.
