Young minds compete in first African Spelling Bee

Monash South Africa (MSA) is teaming up with the African Spelling Bee Consortium to organise and host the first African Spelling Bee.

The African Spelling Bee is a cross continent event focused on uniting literacy and spelling across Africa. The last leg will be hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday, 16 July.

The competition welcomes 45 delegates from across Africa, including countries like Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, Botswana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Uganda and our own South Africa. There will be 27 learners (the top three finalists from the nine participating countries) as well as their chaperones and competition coordinators.

The African Spelling Bee Consortium consists of nine National Spelling Bee organisations from across Africa and has impacted over five million young people through nationally run competitions.

Along with MSA, other partners include the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Nedbank.

The competition consists of four distinct rounds which include multilingual word spellings. Competitors will be eliminated through these rounds and the finalists will battle it out in the fourth and final round as they attempt to spell 25 Championship Words.

The winner of the competition will be named the African Spelling Bee Champion and will be awarded an MSA undergraduate scholarship.

During their stay, the delegates will also have the opportunity to go on an educational tour of Nelson Mandela’s house in Vilikazi Street as well as the Hector Pieterson Memorial. Finalists will be taken to popular tourist destinations like Nelson Mandela Square and Montecasino. International guests will also visit the MSA campus for a tour.
