Update: Witpoortjie cigarette hijacker caught

Cigarettes worth R200 000 (16 boxes) were recovered

One suspect, who was involved in Friday morning’s hijacking of a British American Tobacco (BAT) van, has been arrested.

A chase ensued after the van was hijacked on Generaal Pienaar Avenue. A BAT support vehicle as well as a Flying Squad vehicle chased the suspect in the BMW that was used to force the cigarette van off the road, and finally managed to block him off at Monument Checkers.

One suspect was arrested. They seized six firearms of which two were assault rifles. All the serial numbers were filed off. One of the firearms was positively linked to the hijacking that took place earlier the same morning. Following up on another lead they found the Toyota Quantum, used to transport the stolen cigarettes, abandoned on Robert Broom Drive. Cigarettes worth R200 000 (16 boxes) were recovered. It is unclear why the other suspects abandoned the vehicle and their loot.
