Green light for Currie Cup match

Come support the Lions and Poorte in July

There are 28 days left until the Xerox Golden Lions take on the SWD Eagles in their penultimate Currie Cup match on 16 July.

The game will be hosted at the new home grounds of Roodepoort Rugby Club, Hoërskool Roodepoort. The event will be the first time the West Rand has hosted a Currie Cup match in recent history. The club has been hard at work in conjunction with the school to make sure everything is up to standard for the big game. Roodepoort Rugby Club’s president, Neels van Aswegen could not contain his excitement at the prospect of his club hosting a match of this caliber.

“This is a great opportunity, not only for the club and school in terms of exposure, but for the community too. We are a community-based club and we’re bringing the Currie Cup to the community”, he said.

The club were allocated a match as part of the decision by the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) to take the sport back to its stakeholders. A tender process was followed and the GLRU carried out a due diligence audit, after which Roodepoort Rugby was one of five clubs granted the rights to each host a Currie Cup match.

“Financially this will help the club immensely, especially when it comes to giving back to the community. I’ve heard people say they’ve never been to Ellis Park so now is their chance to get a piece of what it’s like and support the Lions and Poorte. This event will help build the relationship between the community, the club and the school,” he said.

According to Van Aswegen, it has not been easy to organise an event of this magnitude, but everything has gone smoothly. After the club was allocated a game, the GLRU visited the grounds where the game will be played and made an inspection. The club was required to upgrade the medical facilities, the size of changing rooms, the quality of the field, security, health, safety and parking conditions, and more, before they were given the green light. They had to also adhere to strict regulations from the Joint Operations Committee (JOC) and South African Rugby Union.

Van Aswegen promises a fun-filled day for everyone, starting with Welpie rugby from 8am to 12pm. A tournament featuring schools such as Maragon Private Schools, and Hoërskole Linden and Florida will take place on the A field. There will be various stalls as well as jumping castles and other fun games for children.

“We are doing this for the community so I urge everyone to come out in support of the match as well as the Lions and Poorte. This is a chance for everyone to see their favourite players in the Lions jersey without having to drive all the way to Emirates Stadium,” he said.

Entrance to the games has been set at a standard rate of R20 per vehicle, while walk-ins will need to pay R10 each. Season-ticket holders will have free entrance to all these matches. There will be VIP facilities, bar facilities, food stalls and a children’s play area. Main pavilion seating (family zone) will cost R30, while the cordoned-off VIP Bar-service Zone will set you back R300, which includes lunch, snacks and a R100 drinks voucher (additional drinks will be available from the cash bar).
