Florries alumni in Springbok team

Elton and Garth in Bok squad

Two former Hoërskool Florida pupils have been selected for Springbok coach Allister Coetzee’s team.

Elton Jantjies was a Florries rugby player in 2008, while Garth April played there in 2009. They both played in the school’s first team.

They were coached by the school’s Koos van Vuuren. After matriculating, Elton and Garth joined the Xerox Golden Lions to further their careers.

Elton made his professional debut with the Lions (Super Rugby) during the 2011 Super Rugby season, and his international debut with the Springboks during the inaugural Rugby Championship.

He has received several significant sporting awards, including the South African Rugby Union (SARU) Young Player of the Year and SA U/20 Player of the Year awards in 2010.

Although Garth has been beset by injuries during his career, he has picked himself up and is currently playing with the Sharks. His regular position is fullback, but he can also play as fly-half or centre.

“Hoërskool Florida is proud to say that they are true Florries. We expect them to make us proud when they appear in the Green and Gold. We all know that Elton has made a name for himself, but unfortunately Garth had a few injuries that delayed his chances. However, he has now been given a chance in Natal and the rest will be history,” said the school’s Mornè Hanekom.

Both players will be in the team that will face Ireland in three Test matches.
