So much sadness

There has been so much sorrow and grief this past week.

First there was the devastating news of the three murders in Krugersdorp. The newsroom was a hive of activity as the events broke.

It is terribly sad. I didn’t know any of the victims, but I know they have families – people who loved and cared for them. I don’t think you ever get over something like this. I think you just learn to live with the loss and accept that nothing you do can, or will, change what happened.

Everybody is now waiting patiently to see what punishment the suspects will face. Let’s pray they get what they deserve. No-one has the right to take the life of another.

And then came the equally sad story of Hendry, the Macaque monkey, who had to be euthanised. The West Rand Pet and Bird Farm, where he lived, has been a controversial subject for many years. The latest event in its troubled existence, the death of Hendry, has caused an uproar in the community.

Many people want to know why something wasn’t done sooner; why the animals were not confiscated long ago, and why the owners are allowed to continue operating the farm. Many of these questions will probably remain unanswered.

In a sense, the SPCA’s hands are tied, because they have to follow procedure. I know that doesn’t make the death of an animal acceptable, but that is how it is. If I could choose a super power for myself, it would be to use a magic wand to heal the sick, stop the world hurting both animals and humans, and teach people to have respect for the environment and humans. In the mean time, I will pray for every lost soul and everyone (and every thing) that becomes a victim of the evil actions of others.

Until next week, take care of one another.
Ciao
