New dangerous drug trend among children

The right mix leads to an instant high.

There is a new drug trend among pupils at various schools across the country. It comprises taking a mixture of codeine-containing cough syrup, cold drink, paracetamol tablets and crushed sweets.

The concoction is known as “purple drank”, “syrup” or “lean” and Sprite is the mix of choice. The codeine causes an euphoric sedated state of mind and the right mixture of cold drink and crushed sweets gives an instant high.

According to the principal of the school that went public with the problem, pharmacists told him that there has been a spike in the sale of cough syrup to school children. Popular brands are Benylin and Broncleer. Pupils hide the fact they are drinking the mixture by bringing it to school in their water bottles.

Symptoms of codeine abuse include:

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Itchiness

• Drowsiness

• Constipation

• Difficulty breathing

• A sedated appearance
