Update: Metro Police investigating drunk driving allegations

Deputy Director doubts allegations.

The Deputy Director of the Metro Police Region C, Mike Smith, said he doubts the various allegations of the Allow family with regard to the accident that landed their daughter in ICU.

Abdul Allow, the father of nine-year-old Rubeina, alleged that it took Metro Police members three hours to arrive at the accident scene. He also alleged that they failed to do a breathalyser test on the alleged visibly drunk driver of the other vehicle. Smith said officers are under no obligation to test for alcohol but that he would expect a “good ” member to do it. He also said in an accident like the one in question one of the drivers should have been arrested for reckless driving based on the damage to the vehicles.

“Someone was definitely driving recklessly,” said Smith. “I also find it hard to believe the claim that one of the vehicles ended up 300m away from where the vehicles impacted each other.

“I am not saying that the allegation of the officers coming to the scene three hours late is not true, but our average time to get to a scene is 15 minutes.

“Regardless, I definitely want to do an investigation but I will only see the members in question on Monday (23 May). I would also like to speak to the family myself,” said Smith.
