Hijackers now target Witpoortjie

Motorcycle theft also remains a problem.

West Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) has raised concerns after two crime-related incidents in Witpoortjie recently.

According to their spokesperson, Frik van Zyl, they suspect that hijackers might have set their sights on the area. At around 11.15pm on Friday (6 May), WSRNW members were patrolling in the vicinity of Haynes Street when they heard a loud crash. On investigation they found that two vehicles had driven into rocks that were placed on Corlett Avenue. Luckily for the drivers a Metro Police vehicle, as well as a vehicle from a security company were driving a short distance behind them, which might have prevented a potential hijacking.

WSRNW is also concerned about the motorcycle theft epidemic that persists. On Monday morning (9 May) a resident of Rutter Street discovered that his two off-road motorcycles had been stolen. CCTV footage showed the crime had taken place around 2.45am. The suspects went into the neighbour’s yard, broke through a precast wall and accessed the victim’s yard. They then pushed the two motorcycles down the road. It is believed the suspects took the motorcycles somewhere close by, said Van Zyl. On a previous occasion Van Zyl said as many as four motorcycles a week were being stolen in their precinct.

“We appeal to motorcycle owners to take every measure possible to secure their beloved bikes,” said Van Zyl.
