Discovery man does #HaveAHeart

People show their support for the Record's #HaveAHeart Project.

Despite travelling regularly between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, generous Bobby Naidoo caught wind of the Record’s #HaveAHeart Project and decided to step in.

As a man who owns a transport company and a member of Lions Club International in Cape Town, 71-year-old Bobby’s heart broke when he read about Have A Heart Care Centre in Roodepoort CBD on the front page of a recent edition of the Record.

#HaveaHeartCentre ready for you

Being busy with renovations in his Discovery home, he decided to generously donate three wardrobes as well as curtaining to the cause.

On Friday morning 6 May Anton Schlebusch, founder Marius Oelofse’s brother-and-law and passionate supporter of his cause, and two of his employees collected the items from Bobby’s house.

“Being an old man myself and in a privileged position, I couldn’t help but reach out to those my age that have nothing — this is a brilliant cause and I thank the newspaper and Marius for initiating it,” Bobby said.

Donations have been streaming in from residents who want to assist in the Have a Heart project. “It is amazing that there are people who prefer to donate rather that trying to sell their goods. It is really heartwarming to see so much generosity from the community,” said editor Roelien Vorster. “Helping others gaining some dignity feels good; Thank you to everybody who opened their heart to such a worthy cause.”

About the #HaveAHeart Project:

The Record in April took the decision to take hands with founder Marius Oelofse and his Have A Heart Care Centre in Roodepoort CBD. The centre is aimed at reestablishing the dignity of Roodepoort’s elderly by providing shelter and food to those who receive merely a basic government pension. The care centre will offer accommodation to those receiving a monthly old-age grant (pension) from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), which is R1 500.

New hope for elderly in CBD

The centre will charge a Sassa old-age grant recipient R950 per month for accommodation and three meals a day. Pensioners will share rooms. Marius set the boarding rate at this amount to afford residents part of their pension for toiletries and other personal expenses. There is room for 40 pensioners in the building the NPO is renting at 47 Van Wyk Street in the Roodepoort CBD. A lot still needs to be done in terms of maintenance on the building itself and furnishing it, not to mention in terms of food, crockery and cutlery.
