Beware of pyramid schemes

Investigation at sensitive stage.

Roodepoort Police has issued a warning to the public to be careful of pyramid schemes doing the rounds.

According to spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo, victims are promised large sums of money in return for large deposits. The victims are promised that the larger the amount they deposit, the larger the payout would be. They are told that within a certain time they would be paid a lump sum, but this promise never gets honoured.

Khumalo told the Record that she could not divulge any more information at this stage because the investigation is at a sensitive stage. Police have advised the public to check first whether a company is a registered financial service provider to prevent becoming involved in a pyramid scheme.

It could not be established whether the warning related to the alleged pyramid scheme MMM.
