Florida swimmers wind down season

Successful season for the Florida Swimming Club

The Florida Swimming Club has had a successful season as their swimmers participated in various competitions.

They kicked off the season with the Provincial Championships in December.

The team placed 10th out of 30 clubs overall at CGA champs and 10th at the EGA Championships.

This was follwed by a trip to Dubai in February to participate in the Hamilton Dubai Open and a training camp.

Five swimmers participated in the competition and qualified for the finals in their events.

Chentell Viviers won a silver medal and Cherne Midgely won a bronze medal in the 800-metre freestyle event.

Coach Tracey Hemphill was pleased with her swimmers’ performances.

“We were in Dubai for 6 days. We were very lucky to be hosted by Hamiltons Aquatics and the swimmers got to go up the Burj Kalifa, we went on a Desert Safari and got to compete in a world class facility. It was a fantastic trip for everyone both from an experience and a competitive perspective,” she said.

In Cape Town last month at the Open Water Nationals, three of their swimmers Jessica de Beer, Chentelle Viviers and Cherne Midgley qualified for the 3 and 5 kilometre events. Jessica won a bronze medal in the 3 kilometre event.

The club’s Cassidy Stockigt, Alfred Purchase, Callum Thomson and Amy O’Rourke participated in the SA Level 3 National Age Group Championships in Port Elizabeth and qualified for the finals.

In the level 2 regional qualifiers held at Ellis Park, Craig Slabbert, Georgi Synodinious, Alyssa Norman, Tammy Frylink, Demi Lee Carlisle, Paige Salis and Minnique van der Merwe made it into the finals.

The team placed 28th overall out of 60 clubs.

“As a swimming club we are proud of everyone. We strive to run a successful swimming programme. Not only do we help develop swimmers but also their life skills,” said Hemphill
