From religious celebrations to public drunkenness

How do you celebrate St Patrick's Day?

Most people just drink themselves into a stupor to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, but do they know where it originated?

The day is also commonly referred to as the Feast of St Patrick and is an Irish day of cultural and religious celebrations. The date coincides with the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (AD 385-461), who was the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

In the early 17th century it was made an official Christian feast day and is actually also observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Lutheran Church.

Traditionally, it commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.

People are also known to wear green attire on the day.

With Lenten restrictions on eating and consuming alcohol being lifted on the day, it has propagated the modern celebration of high alcohol consumption.

Which part of St Patrick’s Day do you celebrate?
