High Tea in aid of Aaron

High Tea to raise funds for Aaron Halters.

As part of their efforts to raise funds, the Halters family hosted a High Tea at the Crown Christian School in Maraisburg.

Family and friends braved the chilly weather to celebrate and raise funds for Aaron Halter’s who needs a cochlea implant. Aaron was born with bilateral severe-profound Sensori-Neural loss, a type of hearing loss, or deafness, in which the root cause lies in the inner ear (cochlea and associated structures), vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII), and central auditory processing centers of the brain. This means he cannot hear and hearing aids are inefficient.

Debbie Halters, the maternal grandmother of Aaron was happy seeing the community supporting their event.

“This is our third fundraising event and it’s a huge success. It’s exciting to meet some of the people who have helped us in our cause and to thank them in person. We had lucky draws and other great prizes to give away to our guests,” she said.

The family also invited Aaron’s audiologists who have been instrumental in helping the family deal with Aaron’s condition in a positive manner and to ensure they are updated on his progress.

Audiologist Shamim Ebrahim gave Aaron hearing aids to see if they would help before realizing a cochlea implant was needed.

“Aaron was refered to me by a colleague and I diagnosed his hearing loss. He wasn’t speaking and I did a diagnostics test on him. That is when we picked up his hearing loss. At the time I was not sure if it he needed a cochlea implant or a hearing aid. The family has been amazing in their assistance of Aaron and the future looks positive for the young boy,” she said.

Audiologist Wendy Deverson who has been working with Aaron for the last few months said there is a chance the young boy can attend a mainstream school.

“I was the one who recommended Aaron go the cochlea implant route. Because he is so young, if he is able to make sense of sound, he will be able to go to a mainstream school.

The difference between normal hearing and a cochlea implant hearing is that the implant stimulates sends electrodes to the brain do the normal function of the ear.

The brain has to then make sense of the stimulation and recognize it as sound,” she said.
