IEC: Get ready for the final registration round

The final registration weekend is approaching in April.

Two days in April will be the last dedicated to registering local voters for the upcoming local elections.

This according to the Independent Electoral Commission, who has scheduled the final voter registration weekend for Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April. Voting stations will be open from 8am til 5pm on both days, the IEC on their website stated.

Residents who have turned 18 since the previous elections in 2014 are encouraged to register to vote. Those who have moved residences since the previous elections also need to update their registration details at these stations.

To vote, one must be a South African citizen older than 18 and possess a green, bar-coded ID book or smart ID card or valid temporary ID certificate. One can only vote in the district you live in and at the station you’ve registered to.

The IEC recommends visiting their map on maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/ and submitting your exact street address in order to identify your correct voting station and get details.

At the registration weekend earlier in March, three million people visited voting stations, which is more than double what the turnout was in 2011. Of the 3 097 194 people who went to voting stations, 22 per cent were new registrations, 35 per cent were re-registrations (at a new voting station) and 43 per cent were people visiting to confirm and/ or update their registration details.
