Parliament should be servant, not master

Florida Toastmasters Club again at the root of interesting, inspiring speeches.

Members and guests at a recent Florida Toastmasters Club meeting heard parliamentary law should be the servant, not the master, of the assembly.

This according to speaker Robert de Kramer, who presented an educational session on parliamentary procedure.

The prepared speeches session was next. Alex Muller delivered his Ice Breaker Speech entitled, ‘The one with the long hair’. He spoke about his personal history. Barry Nelson was next at the podium and serious about motivating the crowd to go live life. His speech, titled ‘Dream machine’ took the crowd on an inspiring journey, quoting words for Martin Luther King’s infamous speech, ‘I have a dream’.

“Do not ask, why me? Say, try me!” he encouraged his listeners.

Lawrence Makeleni’s speech weighed up the reasons not to exercise against the reasons in its favour, concluding it would be easier to come by arguments against the gym. While those excuses might be legitimate in your head, they won’t be enough for your physical health, he said.

Michael Glencross’s speech was based on the personal and professional history of Jamie Vardy, an English footballer who plays for Premier League club Leicester City as a striker, sometimes a winger.

Maggie Temana spoke about beef production, whether delicious steak or amazing biltong, and how it forms a big and important segment of South Africa’s agriculture.

Robert de Kramer imagined himself Chef Robert, demonstrating clever cooking tricks for the preparation of pickled eggs in his turn.

Elize Ellis concluded the prepared speeches session with her speech, ‘Slow food, fast people’, speaking about the slow food evolution that was imagined to combat the fast food industry and prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions.

De Kramer waalked away with the trophy for the Best Prepared Speech. Dawn Hemming was awarded the trophy for Best Evaluator. Barry Nelson and Paul Muller were both awarded their Competent Communicator 1 certificates.
