A new legend in the making at Florida Lake

Florida Lake Canoe Club nurturing young talent

While Florida Lake Canoe Club legend Shaun Maphanga prepares his trip to the world’s toughest endurance event, the ultimate FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon, his five-year old daughter is building up her canoeing stamina and ability to be able to do a lap around the lake which measures over one-kilometre race.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon is 120-kilometres between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Maphanga is hailed as the legend of the club for his silver medals at the Dusi and a podium position in the Sub Veteran age category.

He has achieved extremely well in the sport where he started off as the janitor of the club grounds, looking after the lawns.

Atle Maphanga is sponsored through the club as well as subsidised by Little Scholars in Maraisburg She receives swimming lessons from The Swim School in Florida, where her father also learnt to swim, in order to be a canoeist.

“At only 5 years of age, Atle’s enjoyment of her sport as well as her love of swimming in the lake under watchful eyes is evident and the question arises, will she also be a legend at Florida Lake Canoe Club?” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

The club’s paddlers will be spending three days in the valley of the Umsindusi River in preparation for the upcoming Dusi Canoe Marathon.
