Not sure why they aren’t Pik[ing]itup

Trash not being collected by Pikitup remains unexplained.

It is unclear why some areas of Roodepoort are experiencing issues with illegal dumping and failure on Pikitup’s side in collecting trash.

Many residents over the past week have contacted the newsroom complaining Pikitup schedules are not being adhered to.

A man said that in Hamberg, particularly near the Hamberg station, wheeley bins are full to the brim and the area is generally dirty and littered. According to Felicity Brown in an email to the Record, Roodekrans and particularly Maime Avenue has a similar problem.

No explanation has been offered to the residents, who have tried various avenues in seeking clarity.

Unfortunately, the entity has this afternoon failed to elaborate on the reasons for the lapse. Contacting spokesperson Jacky Mashapu, the Record was told he is on annual leave and referred to a number that was not answered. Attempts to contact the Roodepoort depot number 087 357 1572 has also proved unsuccessful.

The Record then attempted getting hold of a communications person at its head office on 011 712 5200 but heard an automated voice prompt say, “The communications department is not available to take your call”.

Details of the issues have been forwarded to Pikitup officials. The Record will update this story as soon as more information becomes available.

In the meanwhile, residents can report issues with Pikitup to the Joburg Call Centre on 0860 JOBURG (562 874) or their local ward councillors.
