Roodies show spirit and collect water

The Roodepoort Athletics Club doing their bit to help those drought-stricken communities.

The Roodepoort Athletics Club family came together to join the water collection initiative that has swept the county this month.

Members of the club were asked to bring 2-litre water bottles during last night’s (27 January) time trials.

In just one night, the club managed to collect almost 1000 litres of water.

This is to assist farmers and communities in the North West and Free State, offering relief from the heat wave that is currently gripping the country.

The idea to collect water started with Sharon Booysen and Riette Breydenbach as they participated in a club run last week.

“We saw similiar water collecting initiatives from other organizations and we decided why not try and help. We sent out messages to our members on Monday and the response has been amazing,” said Booysen.

The club has not decided where they will donate the water but are inviting members of the community to join them in their water collection drive which will end on the 10 February, the club’s braai night.

“Some people from these drought stricken provinces have no water so to be able to give those who don’t have is a blessing. We take for granted that we can open a tap and water comes out, they don’t have that luxury. What we are doing wont change the world but it will make a difference,” said Booysen.
