The Best in the West

The best pupils in the West awarded at the Gauteng Department of Education's D12 Awards

Victory House Private School’s matric pupil Dayna Jane Ferguson was awarded the Dux Award at the Gauteng Department of Educations’s District 12 awards.

Not only did she receive the Dux Award for outstanding performance in the national senior certificate exams, she was awarded the top learner in independent schools.

Ferguson scored 90 per cent and above for all her subjects and she was beaming as she was lavished praise on the night.

Her school, Victory House also shared the award for the top independent school three other independent schools and was also awarded in the excellence in schools category.

Hoërskool Florida was named received the overall excellence school award, meaning they are the best school in the district.

The school also received the award for the best performance school town school in the west.

The awards ceremony was held at the Hoërskool Roodepoort’s auditorium.

Johannesburg West’s District Director Dennis Macuacua attended the awards and shared some words of wisdom with the young pupils who will be adventuring towards tertiary education next month.

He implored them to work hard and not to be distracted by miscellaneous issues which will bring them down. His words were echoed by guest speaker Maano Ramadwa, a former principal who shared his experiences in university and had the crowd in stitched with his funny anecdotes.

Moses Nkonyane, the chief director at the Gauteng Department of Education also made a speech towards the pupils, encouraging them to reach for their dreams. This is among numerous other awards which the school’s educators received on the night.

Florida’s educators were not the only one’s honoured as teachers from West Ridge High School, Hoërskool Die Adelaar, Victory House, Hoërskool Die Burger, Allen Glen High School, Lantern Skool and Florida Park High School.

West Ridge High School’s Caitlin Anthony and Hoërskool Florida’s Monique Thorn received the award for the highest percentage in Afrikaans FAL and Afrikaans HL respectively.

Thorn’s schoolmates Amorè Grobler received two awards for Afrikaans HL and Biology while Vanessa Kennedy received an award for English FAL.

Austin Labuschagne received two awards in Information Technology and Civil Technology.

Schalk Burger received an award for the Computer Application Technology and Brendan Jansen received an award for Engineering Graphics and Design.

Lumar Kirstein received the award for Music.

Princess High School’s Tiisetso Mmatli received an award for highest percentage in history while Angelique Jones from Florida Park High School received the highest percentage in tourism.

West Ridge High School’s Onkgopotse Matlhaku received the highest percentage in visual arts.

Lantern Skool was named the top LSEN school in the west.
