Canoe race attracts top paddlers

Thrilling canoe race at Euro Steel Crocodile River Race.

Gauteng paddlers were thrilled to have the top South African paddlers to race with on our local river preparing for the upcoming.

The Euro Steel Crocodile River race hosted by Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, took place from Heron Bridge Farm through the Lanseria area on the Jukskei River last weekend (16 and 17 January).

This forms part of the preparations for the upcoming FNB Dusi endurance event in February. World renowned paddlers such as Hank McGregor, Jasper Mocke, Andy Birkett, and Lance Kime were a great draw card to the local river race as the Euro Steel team.

The Euro Steel CEO, Colin Wilson also participated in the race to enjoy the event.

“The water level was superb after rains stopped cricket in Wanderers on the Friday night. Run off from the East Rand stormed into the water systems, while there was also good high level of water down the Hennops after the confluence of the Crocodile River, to fill the river nicely as it pours itself into Hartebeespoort dam,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s Melusi Nxumalo and Donald Moncho pitted their strength and skill against the top paddlers in the country, managing to finish second under 23 combination, in a time of 4: 39.

Other finishers from Florida included Serge Van Hee in fifth single finisher and Jerome Boulle with Byron Sadler who finished in 5:27.

Richard Daws and Eric Brown whose steering cable broke, hobbled across the finish line in 6: 39.

Florida’s top paddler Shaun Maphanga broke and sank his boat on the first day, while Macdonald and Mondi Nkosi also lost their boat during a swim in the waves and fast flowing water.
