Florida Running geared for New Year

Florida Running Club looking forward to the year.

The Florida Running Club hosted its first time trials of the New Year this week (5 January).

The club was active during the festive season as they won the Best Club- Social and Dressed award at the Pirates Wobblers and Wiggles charity run in December.

The club has now opened registrations for new members and those who want to apply for running licenses.

“Our goal this year is to increase the camaraderie in the club and have bigger presences at road races. We are a social club yet still strive to compete so we can improve,” said the club’s chairperson Tessa Shellard.

Another focus of the club is to help novice runners to participate and cross the finish line at the Comrades Marathon every year.

They do this by providing experienced coaches from the club to advise and train the runners.

Besides running, the club offers cycling and tri-athlon, at times riding at the Cradle.

On the day, the club had their first braai night of the year and celebrated the birthday of member Keith Norman.

The club also welcomed some new faces, one of them being Peaceman Mashamba from Kenmare. Mashamba decided to join the club to try and

lose weight.“I used to participate in the park runs but then had to stop. When I decided to start again, I found this club to be the most organized. Running with other athletes is much better as there is support on the road and I like that,” he said.
