Armed suspect arrested in CBD

Community aided police in arresting the armed man.

An armed suspect was apprehended by community members after he attempted to rob a woman in Meyer Street.

On 30 December the woman was walking along the street when an unknown male approached her from behind, wielding a knife, and attempted to stab her, Roodepoort Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo said.

“He proceeded to grab her handbag and run off with it, and the woman started screaming for help.”

Members of the community got involved and chased the suspect down, finally catching hold of him in Van Wyk Street. The Roodepoort Police were subsequently called and he was arrested. A case of common robbery was opened.

The suspect made his first appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday 4 January.
