Final river race of the year

Florida Lake Canoe Club has final river race of thhe year.

Florida Lake Canoe Club’s Richard Daws and Eric Brown finished the club’s gruelling river race in a time of 3:9.

The race which was hosted earlier this month is the final river race of the year in Gauteng earlier.

The race is used as Dusi training, with paddlers practicing their portaging stamina and endurance.

This occurred on a low level Klip River, from Daleside to Meyerton.

“The 32km river race felt much longer. The low water levels required numerous portages where paddlers had to get out of the river and run past obstacles to continue their race. This was great endurance training for the world’s toughest canoe endurance event, the Dusi marathon which takes place in February next year,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

Despite the hot conditions and tough river sections, the fitter paddlers with good running skills enjoyed the challenge.

“Ice cold Lucozade and Hansa Pilsener sponsored to refresh the competitors was available and Kia/Hyundai Fourways helped with logistics and meals. The Roodepoort Athletics Club ensured there were ice cold drinks on the long hot dusty portage section,” said Dallas.
