A lesson for first time canoeists

Young paddlers get some real experience in Meyerton.

Earlier this month, the juniors in the school league canoeing programme at Florida Lake Canoe Club enjoyed their first introduction to fast flowing currents and moving water.

The introduction occurred at a river rapid in Meyerton.

Paddlers, young and old, including U/12 paddlers learned how to manage their boats on the river and thoroughly enjoyed their new learning curve.

It was quite challenging at first for the paddlers but they managed after getting used to conditions after short amounts of time.

“The children learned to enjoy the experience of falling out of their boats, recovering and shooting the rapid. This all happened while they were surrounded by experienced paddlers ready to assist where needed, followed by an enjoyable picnic at the riverside,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.

This week, the juniors will also participate in a training camp to concentrate on fitness, paddling stamina, sprints, as well as strength exercises during the week.

“The camp will take place at the lake with daily fun activities with meals and refreshments sponsored by family members of Armaan Mulla, as well as Kamilah and Ameerah Hank,” said Dallas.
