Two Pitbulls stolen from SPCA

Two dogs stolen from the SPCA.

Two pitbulls were allegedly stolen from the Roodepoort SPCA last week.

The manager of the Roodepoort SPCA, Mandy Cattanaugh said the dogs were surrendered to the SPCA because the owner had moved into a townhouse complex and the said yard was too small.

“The owners said they were told to get rid of the dogs. Both animals were sterilised and moved to the confiscation kennel at the back of our premises. The paperwork had been done and the dogs were ready to be adopted,” Cattanaugh said.

She added that the original owner returned and demanded the dogs back. “We initially said no, but they came back again last week Saturday. The inspector said they have to return on the Monday as there was nothing they could do over the weekend.”

Cattanaugh said the dogs mysteriously disappeared that Sunday night. “The SPCA has a security guard at the front gate, but the people parked their car at the back of the premises, took out a ladder and bolt cutters and took the dogs.” She added that the security guard at the shooting range saw what had happened and is able to provide a description of the car and the people.

“A theft case was opened at the police.”

Cattanaugh said they are required by law to follow procedure even if the original owners want their dogs back. “Instead of waiting for Monday, someone stole the dogs. We don’t know if the animals are okay and if they are being looked after. For all we know the people who took the dogs might use them for dog fighting purposes,” a distraught Cattanaugh said.

If anybody has seen the dogs or know of their whereabouts, contact the SPCA on 011 672 0448.
