“Age is irrelevant unless you’re wine”

Florida Toastmasters said age is irrelevant in one of the many speeches delivered last week.

During their latest meeting the Florida Toastmasters discussed the theme of change.

The sharp crack of the gavel reverberated through the room at 7.30pm sharp and key players engaged in the theme of the evening. Toastmaster Barry Nelson took from the recent rugby world cup, saying it showed him the Northern Hemisphere must change its ways.

“Simply put, if what you are doing isn’t working, change it,” he told the crowd.

He also proposed the toast to Toastmasters International, quoting famous playwright George Bernard Shaw in saying “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

Dawn Hemming proposed the toast of the evening to the word ‘perseverance’, a continuous effort to do or achieve something despite difficulty, failure or opposition.

Tim Knights presented the educational session, focusing on meeting and motions within a Toastmasters club.

Toastmaster Johan Herman captivated listeners with his ice breaker speech entitled “The story of my life”. Herman has a passion for law and talking, and maintains the best part of being a public prosecutor is representing victims, your purpose being to seek justice for them. The downside is not every perpetrator is convicted.

Nomalanga Makwe’s speech, entitled “Age is just a number”, reminded listeners that aging is inevitable but shouldn’t affect one’s state of mind.

“Age is irrelevant unless, of course, you happen to be a bottle of wine.”

Charlene Firmin gave an informative speech on Wi-Fi, which was once a technology known as 802-11b. She helped listeners understand their different Wi-Fi service options and identify specific network locations, or hot spots.

Michael Glencross told the story of “Edwin Link’s unusual device”, the inventor behind flight simulation which all began taking shape in 1927. To demonstrate, he blindfolded members of the crowd and had them spin around before asking which way they were going.

Herman won the trophy for the best prepared speech on the evening. Visiting distinguished toastmaster Ron Young won the trophy for being the best evaluater. Bronwyn Urguhart was the proud recipient of the trophy for delivering the best impromptu speech on colours.

Join the Florida Toastmasters as they gather every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre, Ontdekkers Road.

They’ll next meet on 1 December for Christmas dinner, speeches and dressed up in glitzy outfits from the 1940s.
