People across the world believe a mistletoe is magical because it can heal wounds, increase fertility, bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
Many might celebrate Christmas but some may not know the facts that surround this highly celebrated day.
Every year about 20 000 Rent-a-Santas are hired in America. These Santas undergo training on how to cope with pressure from the public, how to deal with rowdy children, and the foods they should stay away from to avoid bad breath.
Here are other interesting facts about Christmas:
1. Five months into the first World War, troops along the Western front took a Christmas Eve break from fighting to sing carols to one another across the battlefield.
2. According to Facebook, around two weeks before Christmas is one of the most popular times of the year for couples to break up.
3. Santa Claus used to wear the colours blue, white and green in the past. His traditional red suit came from a 1930s advertisment by Coca Cola.
4.“Silent Night” is the most recorded Christmas song in history. It has over 733 different versions copyrighted since 1978.
5. Because of its roots in pagan festivals, Christmas was not immediately accepted by the religious. From 1659 to 1681, it was illegal to celebrate Christmas in Boston, America and you were fined if you were caught celebrating.
6. Christmas was declared illegal in England in the year 1644 by an act of Parliament due to the fact that it was associated with revelry and merrymaking.
7. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on 25 December. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring.
