Healthy minds and bodies at De La Rey

Food for thought at Laerskool De La Rey.

The Morningside Rotary Club together with Clicks Helping Hand Trust paid a special visit to Laerskool De La Rey.

The purpose of the visit was to hand over more than a 100 tins of micro-nutrient supplements for the most underprivileged pupils.

“The school has more than 100 pupils in need of extra support as they belong to dysfunctional homes, are extremely poor or are members of a child-headed household. A feeding scheme and many after-care facilities are run for these pupils even during school holidays,” said Morningside Rotary Club’s President John Thornhill.

He added that the club has formed a close bond with the school and its senior staff over the last four years and regular visits are made to the school.

“We have been instrumental in supplying the school with food, specifically for those needy children, blankets every winter, warm school clothing, video machines, stationery and books to assist in their education. We have also resurfaced three of their multi-purpose sports courts,” he said.

Over the past four years, Clicks Helping Hand Trust has worked to develop a free clinic service offering that makes a meaningful contribution to South Africans from less privileged families. Every Thursday afternoon, Clicks Helping Hand Trust deliver free mom and baby services, free HIV-testing, and further free primary healthcare services.

“There is a need to provide health and health education services to disadvantaged individuals who may not have convenient access to state facilities. This imposes a massive strain on the public healthcare system struggling to overcome poor administrative management, lack of funding and a shortage of skills,” said Clicks Helping Hand’s Liat Beinhart.

Clicks’ helps alleviate this burden by donating professional nurse time, managerial experience and clinical space. Through their national footprint of over 350 pharmacies and 160 clinics, Clicks Helping Hand Trust is able to provide convenient access to primary healthcare.
