Power back on 2.5 hours after tree hits cables

Both Facebook and twitter were abuzz with residents talking about the situation and sharing photos.

A local councillor and residents of the affected areas are praising City Power for restoring supply two-and-a-half hours after a tree fell on overhead cables near a pylon.

During the storm late Monday afternoon at around 5pm a tree fell onto cables near a pylon on Wilgerood Road near the Christiaan de Wet Road intersection. The damage it caused meant that residents in Wilropark, Helderkruin and Roodekrans were without electricity almost immediately. All three these areas fall into ward 83, councillor Suzanne Clarke’s area. She applauded City Power and Joburg EMS for their prompt response to the scene.

“I believe the tree feel due to the weather,” she told the Record this morning.

“Both City Power and Joburg EMS responded in reasonable time.

“People expected the outage to last around six hours, as it is more difficult for technicians to tend to such issues while it is raining.”

However, the power was back on in all affected neighbourhoods within around two-and-a-half hours after it happened, at around 7.30pm.

“Thank you to City Power that worked with such dedication to get us back on the grid in no time,” Clarke said.

Both Facebook and twitter were abuzz with residents talking about the situation and sharing photos. On twitter City Power kept residents updated as to repairs.
